Waste-sorting AI Chatbot
Waste-sorting companion in Berlin.

The Problem
As an expat living in Berlin, I sometimes find it challenging to navigate the complexities of proper waste sorting. The main problem lies in visually identifying the material(s) a waste item is made of to be able to categorise it accurately according to Berliner Stadtreinigung's (BSR) guidelines. Many expats, unfamiliar with local recycling norms, face uncertainty in determining the correct bin for different types of waste – or knowing when something needs to be dismantled or rinsed. This not only leads to personal frustration but also contributes to broader environmental implications due to incorrect waste sorting.

Database & Insights
The Waste-sorting AI Chatbot addresses my waste-identification pain point by utilising advanced image recognition technology. I can upload a photo of my waste item (using my phone or computer). The AI chatbot then provides immediate and accurate identification of the item, coupled with precise instructions on the appropriate disposal method, in line with BSR guidelines. It also includes instructions for additional recycling procedures (such as rinsing the item or removing labels) when necessary.
In addition to its image recognition capabilities, the chatbot is adept at handling textual inquiries about waste management practices in Berlin. It refrains from providing waste sorting suggestions for non-waste items, ensuring the relevance and accuracy of its advice. The app has a powerful backend data collection framework. It gathers user data to gain insights into waste management trends and educational needs among expats and locals alike. This data is invaluable for enhancing waste sorting education and practices in Berlin, particularly for the expat community.
